NOTE 03 / EVERYDAY REFLECTIONS

What a quiet walk taught me about attention

An everyday reflection on noticing more by doing a little less.

English

ORIGINAL NOTE

I used to think that a walk only counted as useful if I listened to a podcast, answered messages, or planned my next task at the same time. One quiet walk changed that idea. I left my headphones at home, put my phone in my bag, and walked without trying to achieve anything.

At first, my mind still moved quickly. I thought about classes, unfinished work, and small worries. After a few minutes, however, I began to notice details that I normally missed: the changing sound of traffic, sunlight on the buildings, a bird on a fence, and the different pace of people around me. Nothing dramatic happened, but my attention became less scattered.

The walk taught me that attention is not only about forcing myself to concentrate on work. It is also about creating moments with fewer demands. When every spare minute is filled with information, my mind has little chance to settle. A quiet walk gives it a simple place to pause.

Since then, I have tried to take short walks without extra media a few times each week. I do not use them to solve every problem. Instead, I use them to return to the present and to notice how I feel. Often, I come back with a clearer mind and a more realistic sense of what I need to do next. Doing a little less is not always wasted time; sometimes it is how I learn to pay attention again.
