How I turn a hard lecture into a one-page learning map

A simple way to move from scattered notes to one useful picture.

When a lecture feels difficult, I used to write more and more notes. Later, I discovered that more notes did not always mean more understanding. I could copy definitions and examples, but I still could not explain how the ideas connected. My solution is to make a one-page learning map after each difficult lecture.

I start by writing the lecture topic in the centre of a blank page. Then I add four short branches: the main question, key concepts, a worked example, and common mistakes. I only use short phrases, arrows, and simple links. This forces me to decide what is important instead of copying every sentence from the slides.

For example, after a statistics lecture on standard deviation, I wrote the central idea as “how spread out the data are.” I linked it to the mean, the calculation steps, and an example comparing two classes’ test scores. I also added one warning: a large standard deviation does not automatically mean that the average score is high or low.

The map is not meant to be beautiful or complete. It is a quick check of my own understanding. If I cannot connect one idea to another, I know exactly what to review. Before a tutorial or exam, one page is also easier to revisit than ten pages of notes. Over time, these maps become a small collection of clear explanations that I made for myself.

当一节课很难时,我以前会拼命记更多笔记。后来我发现,笔记多并不一定代表理解得更深。我可以抄下定义和例子,却仍然说不清这些概念之间有什么联系。因此,现在每次遇到较难的课程内容后,我都会制作一张“一页学习地图”。

我会先在空白纸的中央写下这节课的主题,然后画出四个简短分支:核心问题、关键概念、示例和常见错误。我只使用短语、箭头和简单的连接线。这样做会迫使我判断哪些内容真正重要,而不是把课件上的每一句话都抄下来。

学习地图部分我会问自己的问题
核心问题这节课想解决什么问题?
关键概念我必须理解的三到五个术语是什么?
示例这个概念如何在真实情境或计算中发挥作用?
常见错误我最容易混淆或忘记什么?

例如,在学习统计学中的标准差之后,我把中心概念写成“数据的分散程度”。接着,我把它与平均数、计算步骤,以及比较两个班级考试成绩的例子连起来。我还写下一个提醒:标准差大,并不自动表示平均成绩高或低。

这张地图不需要漂亮,也不需要涵盖所有细节。它更像是一次快速检查,用来确认我是否真的理解了内容。如果我无法把两个概念联系起来,我就能马上知道自己应该复习哪里。上辅导课或准备考试前,复习一张图也比翻十页笔记更有效。慢慢地,这些学习地图会成为一组由我自己写出的清晰解释。
